Xanthi Hondrou-Hill

Xanthi Hondrou-Hill is a Greek poetess who gained her education in Germany, studying German Literature and Linguistics, Journalism and Public Relations Management, in Stuttgart. She has worked as a multi-lingual teacher, journalist, public relations manager and translator for poetry. She is writing poetry since high school and her poems have been published in many prestigious media and international anthologies around the world. She has won many awards recently in China and in Ecuador.

She has worked as Public Relations Manager organising many poetry events, in cooperation with local municipality, archaeological secretary of the Prefecture of Imathias. In the past she worked for the Greek General Consulate in Stuttgart designing, organising and executing multi level events for campaign to improve the Greek fame in Germany.

1001 Nights…

I will wander the nights

with the lamp of Aladdin

to find 1001 stories to tell

my children to teach them

values and morals

to teach them how to dream big,

how to lift off on a flying carpet

dream of a wealthy future

and how to discover wonders

with princesses and heroes

I will sit at the edge of their bed

to tell about thieves counting their days

and honesty in disguise playing

for life and death

with unfinished stories…

where the good and clever women

win back over the bad and evil

their fortunes and lives

Rich merchants trade their wealth away

for a piece of happiness and

banished sons become brave heroes for Sultans

I want to tell stories where

there will be always room for

a little secret door

which needs just a whisper

to open Sesame to find

the 1001 or innumerable treasures

of education, in the bed time stories

of parents and grandparents

which start with

once upon a time  in a land far away there was…

1001 νύχτες…

Θα περιπλανηθώ στις νύχτες

με τη λάμπα του Αλαντίν

για να βρω 1001 ιστορίες να πω

στα παιδιά μου για να τα διδάξω

αξίες και ηθική

για να τους μάθω

πώς να απογειώνονται με ένα ιπτάμενο χαλί

να ονειρεύονται ένα πλούσιο μέλλον

και να ανακαλύψουν θαύματα

με πριγκίπισσες και ήρωες

ή ακόμη 40 κλέφτες που μετράνε τις μέρες τους

με την ειλικρίνεια μεταμφιεσμένη να παίζει

τη ζωή και το θάνατο

σε ιστορίες με συνέχεια…

όπου οι καλές και έξυπνες γυναίκες

νικάνε τους κακούς παίρνοντας πίσω

τις περιουσίες και τις ζωές τους.

Πλούσιοι έμποροι ανταλλάσσουν τα υπάρχοντα τους

για ένα κομμάτι ευτυχίας και

οι εξόριστοι γιοι να γίνονται γενναίοι ήρωες για τους σουλτάνους

Θέλω να πω ιστορίες όπου

Θα υπάρχει πάντα χώρος για

μια μικρή μυστική πύλη

…που χρειάζεται μόνο ένα ψίθυρο …

για να ανοίξει ο Σησάμι για να βρει

τους 1001 ή αμέτρητους θησαυρούς

της παιδείας,

στις βραδυνές ιστορίες πριν τον ύπνο

των γονιών και των παππούδων

που ξεκινούν με

μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, σε μία χώρα μακρινή ήταν…

1001 Nacht…

Ich werde die Nächte durchwandern

mit der Lampe von Aladin

um 1001 Geschichten zu finden,

die ich meinen Kindern erzählen kann,

um ihnen Werte und Moral zu lehren,

zeigen wie große Träume Wirklichkeit werden,

wie auf einem fliegenden Teppich abheben

von einer wohlhabenden Zukunft träumen

und wie Wunder zu entdecken sind

mit Prinzessinnen und Helden

Ich werde an der Kante ihres Bettes sitzen

um von Dieben zu erzählen, die ihre Tage zählen

von verkleideter Ehrlichkeit im Spiel

um Leben und Tod

mit unvollendeten Geschichten…

wo die guten und klugen Frauen

über die schlechten und bösen siegen

ihr Vermögen und ihr Leben zurückgewinnen

Reiche Kaufleute tauschen ihren Reichtum

für ein Stückchen Glück und

verbannte Söhne sich als tapfere Helden für Sultane

enttarnen

Ich will Geschichten erzählen, in denen

es immer Platz gibt für

ein kleines geheimes Türchen

das nur ein Geflüster braucht

um die Tore von Sesam zu öffnen

das 1001 oder unzählige Schätze der Bildung

in den Gute-Nacht-Geschichten

von Eltern und Großeltern verbirgt

die mit den Worten beginnen 

Es war einmal in einem anderen Land…
